Distinguished and Famous people from Manly

🏭 Henry Gilbert Smith

Merchant and developer Henry Gilbert Smith helped shape colonial Manly as a seaside resort during the 1850s. He bought land, promoted subdivision and encouraged the ferry connection that made the settlement accessible from Sydney. His ambition was for an Australian version of Brighton, joining a beachside setting with the transport and accommodation needed to attract visitors. The resort was one phase in a local history stretching back long before colonial settlement. His business interests elsewhere had already included steam ferries, making the relationship between boats, passengers and property an important part of his plans for Manly.

🏅 Layne Beachley

Layne Beachley grew up surfing Manly Beach, starting at four and competing against male surfers while still a teenager. Those local waves were the training ground for a professional career that brought seven world championships, including six in succession from 1998 to 2003, followed by another in 2006. Her record included 29 world-tour victories. After competition, her involvement continued through mentoring, coaching and leadership in Surfing Australia, alongside support for wellbeing organisations. Northern Beaches Council also records her work encouraging female participation in her local boardriders club.

🌟 Zali Steggall

Zali Steggall was born at Manly Hospital in 1974 and lived locally with her family, although childhood time in the French Alps supplied the mountains behind her skiing career. She competed at four Winter Olympics from 1992 to 2002 and won slalom bronze at Nagano in 1998, Australia’s first individual Winter Olympic medal. A world slalom title followed in 1999. Her education continued by correspondence while she competed, before a later legal career and election to federal parliament.

🌟 William Gocher

William Gocher made his mark on Manly’s beach history through a public challenge to restrictions on daylight bathing. In 1902, he advertised that he would swim at Manly in protest and was not arrested. Similar actions occurred at other beaches, while police were increasingly reluctant to intervene when swimmers were considered decently dressed. His action belongs to a wider change in how Australians used the coast: public transport, leisure time and changing attitudes made a day at the beach possible for more people. The local connection is a documented act at Manly, one small episode behind an activity that now seems entirely ordinary. It would overstate the story to credit one protester with single-handedly creating Australia’s beach culture, but his challenge deserves its place in that history.

🏄 Duke Kahanamoku

Hawaiian swimmer and surfer Duke Kahanamoku helped popularise boardriding during his visit to nearby Freshwater in 1915. He made a board from local timber and demonstrated his skill to an enthusiastic crowd. Freshwater is a separate beach from Manly, but the two are linked within the Manly–Freshwater World Surfing Reserve, making the location of his demonstration worth stating precisely. A statue on the Freshwater headland commemorates the visit. The demonstration became an enduring part of the area’s surfing history.

🏛️ Vernon Christie

Vernon Christie was born at Manly in 1909 before his family moved to Queensland and later Tasmania. He became Speaker of Victoria’s Legislative Assembly, earning respect across party lines for independence and an insistence on parliamentary standards. Outside the chamber he helped establish the Save the Yarra Valley League and opposed freeway plans he believed threatened the landscape. Bushwalking, sailing and fishing accompanied public life. The combination gives his career a distinctive shape: a politician could defend the rules of parliament while arguing vigorously against his own government’s development priorities.
